Fact #54616

When:

Short story:

Lionel Hampton And His Orchestra record Kingfish at Radio Recorders, Los Angeles, California, USA. The track is arranged by Quincy Jones, who also plays trumpet.

Full article:

Quincy Jones : We used to play The Bandbox, which was right next door to Birdland. Hamp made us wear these purple cardigan jackets, Tyrolean hats and Bermuda shorts. Every night, he would go on this long trek, beating his mallets all over the tables and everything, with the musicians trailing behind. Then he'd go outside and beat on the all the awnings, waking up the junkies.

But, when we'd go out there, there was Thelonious and Miles and Bird and all these guys, hanging around outside Birdland, and we were embarrassed. So Clifford Brown and I would stop at the bottom of the steps and pretend to tie our shoes so we wouldn't have to go out there and let those guys see us.

Hamp was really the first rock'n'roller. He wouldn't stop until he'd have the crowd jumping off the ceiling. Then he'd suddenly shift gears, come back, and play some long, extended serious composition that Mingus had written.
