Fact #52447

When:

Short story:

The Beatles play in the Urmston Bank Holiday Show, Abbotsfield Park, Urmston, Lancashire, England, UK, Europe, supported by Brian Poole and The Tremeloes, The Dennisons and Johnny Martin And The Tremors. Compere for the event was David 'Diddy' Hamilton, and the audience included local lad Peter Noone, who would go on to find international fame as Herman Of Herman's Hermits.

Full article:

Peter Noone (audience) : In the early Beatles days John Lennon was the clear leader, and Paul was still a handsome second fiddle. George looked the coolest, and the youngest, which drew all the pretty girls towards his edge of the stage, because the other 20-year-old Beatles were WAY too old for their tastes. Ringo was a drummer, so no girls tried to catch his attention because he was so busy leading the band.

Paul Wilde (fan) : It was on an August Bank Holiday in a marquee tent. It was like the forerunner of the outdoor festival. It was over-run. There was hysteria. The larger fans who went to see them were asked to act as bouncers. It seems to me that this is where Beatlemania started.

Tony Bramwell (assistant road manager) : George Harrison had just got his first car, a Ford Anglia, and we drove down to the gig in that, with Neil Aspinall bringing the gear in the van.

Urmston was just a tiny village outside Manchester. This was their annual fete day, a lovely sunny afternoon, with the carnival queen and everything. And somehow, they'd managed to get The Beatles to agree to play on an outdoor stage, just scaffolding and planks rigged up in the recreation field. I think it was their first outdoor gig.
