Orville Gibson dies in Ogdensburg, New York State, USA. A musical instrument maker, Gibson formed the Gibson Mandolin Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1902. After his death the company will increasingly make guitars, the pinnacle of which is generally considered to be the Gibson Les Paul, first manufactured in 1952.
