Route 66 is officially removed from the United States Highway System. The road, which ran a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km) from Chicago, Illinois, USA, to Los Angeles, California, was immortalised in the song Route 66, written by Bobby Troup. The track was first recorded by The Nat King Cole Trio, with later versions recorded by Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Manhattan Transfer and Depeche Mode to name but a few. The road was also the subject of the Route 66 television show in the 1960s.
