Fact #34320

When:

Short story:

The Rolling Stones play at The Flamingo Club, Soho, London, England, UK, Europe, for the first time.

Full article:

Peter Frampton (guitarist, The Preachers) : Rik and Johnny Gunnel, who were the people who did the Isle of Wight Festival, they owned the place, and that was where they started.

You could see the early Manfred Mann there; you could see Jack Bruce and the Graham Bond Organization; you could see Eric and the Bluesbreakers there.

You know, it was all those very cool musical bands; it wasn't poppy at all. So anyway, Johnny or Rik Gunnel offered the Stones a residency there, but one of the other of them said to Mick or Keith or both, "You can have the residency on Saturday night throughout the summer," which was the piece de resistance because you get all the tourists as well. And they said, "But, not with that drummer."

So, exit Tony (from The Preachers) , enter from Alexis Korner's band, Charlie [Watts].

Ian Stewart (pianist, Rolling Stones) : The people who were running the scene in those days were 100% against us, and it was one bloody fight to get anywhere... I'll never forget the first time we went down to the Flamingo. We did an audition on a Sunday afternoon, and the Flamingo was a pretty smart place. It was the modern jazz club in town, and everybody was going down in their zoot suits, white shirts, and all that. I'll never forget saying to Keith, 'You're not going to the Flamingo dressed like that, are you?' He said, 'What ho, Stu, I've only got one pair of fucking jeans!'

Jeff Dexter (scenester/DJ) : It was dark and dingy and it had a great cultural mix; it was filled up with a great cultural cross section. You had the Americans, George Fame and people like him.

That's where I first came across marijuana, yeah. It wasn't as obvious as 1964 when the whole thing started to explode. Mainly Purple Hearts and Black Bombers. Another favoured drug amongst a certain bunch was amyl nitrate, which you could buy over the counter in those days. If you had a bit of speed and a quick sniff of amyl you could really have a great time dancing. And get higher than a kite. That was before it became a gay drug.

There were a few hot French clubs in town, too. It's really strange because there was this sort of underground set of Frenchies who had properties in London. There was this place called La Poubelle.
