The Mar-Keys release their debut single, Last Night, on Satellite Records in the USA. In due course, Satellite will re-name itself as Stax Records. The Mar-Keys will evolve into Booker T. And The MGs and, as well as scoring hits like Green Onions in their own right, they will be the backing band for every artist on the Stax label - including Otis Redding, Sam And Dave, Eddie Floyd and Rufus Thomas.

Steve Cropper (guitarist) : Jerry Lee ‘Smoochy’ Smith came up with the piano riff that was played on organ. Since [producer Chips] Moman didn’t want a guitar on it for whatever reason, I wound up playing the hold-down on the organ on the root note. It hurts me in the Mar-Keys history when people say I wasn’t in the Mar-Keys because there’s no guitar on Last Night but I have to differ with them.
