Shirley Reeves [The Shirelles] : The woman who owned our record company, Florence Greenberg, wrote that song, and she was at a session when we were cutting another single. At the end of the session, we had half an hour left, and Florence said, 'Well, time is money, so let's cut this song'.
We learnt it there and then on the piano with one of the arrangers and we did it a couple of times with the music. They said, 'Okay, that's good enough. We'll throw it on an album', and look, it became one of our greatest hits. It really took flight because it was used so much during the Vietnam war. So many soldiers have told us that they wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for that song. A lot of the wives have beautiful stories to tell us, though some of them are very sad. That song held a lot of people together and it makes me feel real good.
