Alexis Korner : The first Monday we had 500 in and by four weeks we were pulling crowds on both days. I was involved with Ronan O'Rahilly at the time and he wanted us to move from The Marquee to The Flamingo. That was in '63. That move at that time cost the band the opportunity of becoming a major band. It was a mistake. If we'd stayed at The Marquee we would have been really big.

But it wasn't a mistake musically. Charlie (drummer Charlie Watts] had left by then and Cyril and I had split in December. The band at The Flamingo was the best band., the best jazz and r'n'b band that we've ever produced. It was a monster band musically. There was Johnny Parker on piano, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Graham Bond, Ronnie Jones and me.

We flourished at The Flamingo. It gave us the chance to play to spades, which was very important at the time because musical audiences were segregated.
