Full article:

Tom McGuinness (bassist, Manfred Mann] : Our first album [Five Faces Of Man] was recorded in about twelve hours. We recorded onto a four-track tape machine, state of the art at the time. We would all play live in the studio, listening to each other on headphones. A mistake by any of us would mean starting all over again.

Because Paul (vocalist Paul Jones) was in a vocal booth, he might have the chance to re-do his vocal if necessary. Then we would overdub some backing vocals, maracas, and that was that. 'Off you go boys, same time tomorrow.'

If we were doing a six to nine session - late night recording for those days - there was also the chance, in a quiet moment, to hear the rats and mice scuffling around in the echo chamber. The chamber was a room, deep in the bowels of the building, where the rodents came out at night to play.
