Pete Townshend (guitarist, The Who) : (Co-manager) Kit (Lambert) used to brief us before we went into interviews about what to say. Sometimes to be as objectionable, arrogant and nasty as possible. And oh, those outrageous lies we told. I remember telling Jonathan Aitken, 'I have four cars – a Lincoln Continental, a Jag XK150, a Cortina GT and a London taxi,' – and all I had was an old banger. Then I said to somebody else that I was spending between £40 and £50 a week on clothes, and had to borrow money to go to Carnaby Street and buy a jacket in order to pose for a picture.
