Having missed the Top 10 with their previous release, The Supremes return to No1 in the Billboard Top 40 Singles Chart in the USA with I Hear A Symphony, for the first of two weeks. On the same day they reach No1 in the Cash Box chart but only for one week.

Lamont Dozier (co-producer/co-writer) : The question came up, was it time to shift The Supremes, give them to somebody else? Well, what happened was, they were opened up to other producers.
Nobody came up with anything and finally we (Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland) pulled out another one – I Hear A Symphony. Brian was playing this melody … it was sounding sort of classical to me. Eddie took it and ran with the lyrics.
