Crispian Mills (Kula Shaker) : Govinda was the first song we ever played live, and it followed a trip I'd made to India in the spring of 1993. When I got back I went to the Glastonbury Festival with friends and we started rehearsing in a ten-man army tent. We managed to talk our way onto one of the stages there and played the song as a sort of on-the-spot improvisation but actually quite similar to the way we play it now. We then played it every single gig for the next three years until we got signed and regarded it as our 'lucky' song.

It's an Indiana folk song about the legends of Krishna, a little song that the cowherd people sing, indigenous to those people, and we're very fond of it. It was quite difficult to record because it's better suited to live performance and we learned a lot in the process, but it's remained one of our favourites.
