Fact #191844

When:

Short story:

Cajun swamp-pop pioneer Johnnie Allan and his band go duck hunting in Louisiana, USA, with US Senator Bill Cleveland.

Full article:

Johnnie Allan : As a reward for braving cold weather by performing outdoors in winter during his re-election campaign, State Senator Bill Cleveland invited the band on a duck-hunting trip on his marshland property near Forked Island. Being true Cajuns, Harry Simoneaux and I decided to carry the Christmas night celebrations from the Green Lantern Club in Lawtell to the duck blind in Forked Island.

The rest of the band went to bed upon arriving at the hunting camp, arose at 5am, ate breakfast and prepared for the hunt while Harry and I continued our liquid diet. It was still dark when our guides dropped us off our sunken duck blind.

Flashlight and shotgun in one hand, bottle in the other, we alit from the mudboat to discover a huge nutria rat in our sunken blind. 'Too crowded my friend. Hold the flashlight on him, Harry.' BOOM! 'Missed him.' BOOM! 'Got him.'

As day was breaking, Harry began complaining his legs were cold. My friends, never shoot a nutria inside a sunken aluminium duck blind in the middle of a waterlogged marsh.
