Jane Bown (photographer, Observer) : It was a shabby old place in East Ham and, even then, they were brought in two hours early to avoid the crowds of girls outside. Somehow I must have got permission to join the band while they were waiting to go on. They were all closeted in this awful old back room, all hanging around doing their own thing, and they seemed oblivious to my presence.
Eventually, I asked if I should leave and John said, 'No, we like her here.' They were all so separate from each other. Ringo was playing patience, George was sitting with his back up against a sort of old gas heater strumming on a guitar. John was extremely busy as always, buzzing with energy, in and out of everything.
