When:

Short story:

The Rolling Stones play at The Cavern Club, Liverpool, England, UK, Europe, supported by The Roadrunners, The Escorts and the Mastersounds.

Full article:

Bob Wooler (Cavern deejay) : Brian Epstein was putting on a promotion at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton called Southern Sounds ’63 with the Rolling Stones and Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. The Beatles had taken off to such an extent that he no longer had the time to do it. He was farming out the acts to appear elsewhere and he asked me if I would be interested in taking the Rolling Stones at the Cavern and I said, ‘Yes, of course.’ The contract was for £60 and so I took them. They were overawed to play here as it was the place where the Beatles started.

Bill Wyman (bassist, Roilling Stones) : We were great friends with the Beatles, but we were in enemy territory, rather like Max Miller playing the Glasgow Empire. We did well as there was a long queue of people wanting to get in.

Dave Percy (The Roadrunners) : One of our amps developed a fault when we were setting up our gear. We asked The Stones if we could borrow some of their gear. At that time, The Stones probably had the best equipment on the market, and it was with a certain amount of reluctance that they gave us permission to borrow one of their amplifiers. All went well until we were halfway through the song Roadrunner, when smoke started to billow from the borrowed amp. In the nick of time we managed to stop it from bursting into flames, but The Stones, who had been watching from the side of the stage, were definitely not happy blokes at that moment in time.

Dave Percy : Their superior equipment, coupled with their wonderful talent, definitely gave them the edge over most of the other rock'n'roll groups of the period.

Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) : Was it hot! We almost sweated away. They've had so many big groups at The Cavern that you've got to prove yourself. They asked us back, so they must have liked us.
