Mike Hennessy (journalist, Today magazine) : As we fly, second class, towards London in an SAS Caravelle, businessmen troop in a self-conscious procession from the first class cabins and blushingly ask for autographs.

Ed Sullivan (US tv host) : For years we visited London and, on one of our visits to England in late 1963, we couldn't believe all the commotion at Heathrow Airport when we arrived. Mrs Sullivan and I were literally beseiged by thousands of youngsters. Was it a member of the Royal Family? I asked some people who worked at the airport, and they told us these hundreds of teenagers were waiting for The Beatles.

Mike Hennessy : At London Airport the expected hell breaks loose. A police escort, special customs clearance, a flurry of autograph books – and The Beatles squeeze into a car and are whisked away.

Ed Sullivan : And, as I was always on the lookout for new acts for my programme, I decided The Beatles would be a good tv attraction, and also a great news story for our show. So I contacted their manager, Brian Epstein, and agreed to pay them a fee of $10,000 for three shows plus five round-trip airplane tickets and all their expenses for room and board while in America.
