Fact #188615

When:

Short story:

Keith Powell And The Valets record The Answer Is No for Columbia Records, at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, London, England, UK, Europe, with producer Bob Barratt.

Full article:

Bob Barratt (producer) : Competition was always very fierce between the various EMI labels, and the success of Parlophone under George Martin led to demands that Columbia find acts to emulate The Beatles, Gerry And The Pacemakers, etc. I was working for Norrie Paramor as his assistant and I was dispatched to Birmingham. 'It's England's second-largest city – there must be some good groups there.'

Musically, the city was divided in two. Mrs Regan of The Tower Ballroom in Edgebaston, had connections with Decca,so I teamed up with another active young manager - Bob Smith.

Two weeks of work produced a short-list of about ten group. Norrie came up for the day and, after auditions at the Moat House Club, Digbeth, signed seven of them to Columbia.

Included in the seven were Keith Powell And The Valets, Pat Wayne And The Beachcombers and Mike Sheridan And The Night Riders. The trip was later followed by a 'Top Ten Talet Search' utilising small studios all over Britain. Bristol produced Pete Budd And The Rebels, Edinburgh produced the Golden Crusaders and in Glasgow we found Dean Ford And The Gaylords.
