Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, The Shirelles, Clyde McPhatter and others play to an audience of over 10,000 in the Salute To Freedom Concert at Miles College Stadium, Birmingham, Alabama, USA. The makeshift stage collapses during the first part of the benefit show but is quickly repaired, allowing the event to continue.

William B. Williams (DJ WNEW) : It was quite a sight to see hundreds of Negroes, too poor to ride, carrying their chairs along the streets of Birmingham on their way to the benefit.

When the stage collapsed and all the lights went off, the audience began to sing We Shall Overcome and 10,000 voices roared the message."
