Patricia Campbell (fan from Bushey, Herts) : In August 1963 my friend Carole and I were just silly 17-year-olds. She was a real Beatles fan and somehow had found out the name of the street where Paul McCartney lived, so she insisted we go to Liverpool and find him.

When we got there we just rang the bell. Paul's father opened the door and told us his son was out, but I said, 'Oh no, we have come all the way from London. He disappeared then came back. "Please come in," he said. "You're mad, you know!" I remember that it seemed very dark.

There was a guitar under the stairs and a piano with a sheet of music. He showed us into the back room and Paul was eating his cereal and he looked up at us with his lovely big eyes. He asked us where we were from and where we were staying. Then he asked if we wanted a boiled egg! 'My Dad makes a very good boiled egg,' he said.

We were so dumbstruck we couldn't say much. We just apologised for interrupting his breakfast and left. What struck us most was that they were so lovely to these two girls brave, or silly, enough to knock on a Beatle's door.
