Fact #188135

When:

Short story:

The Beatles play at The Queen's Theatre, Blackpool, England, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Tony Bramwell (Beatles aide) : Getting out of theatres with The Beatles before the fans could close in became like a military exercise. Usually, we'd play God Save The Queen after the last song, and the audience would stop in their places, and by the time they got moving, the band was a mile away.

But it was complicated by the fact that John was exceptionally short-sighted. Almost blind. When the time came to rush off, he'd usually snatch his glasses off the top of his amp, grab hold of George's jacket bottom and be hauled along to the exit that way.

When we played the Queen's Theatre on July 21, 1963, the escape route was a winding maze of tunnels and corridors that went down under the stage, then under the auditorium and came up by the front door. The curtain went down, the lads went off and everything was fine.

About an hour later, the theatre was completely deserted and I was checking the gear on the stage when I heard noises down below. I went down, and there was John. He'd somehow come adrift from the others and, being so blind, eventually just gave up and settled down to wait it out.
