Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) : The Stranglers started playing in London in 1976 (N.B. they actually started in 1974), and it became clear that there were a lot of people who weren't very happy, who were on the dole and listening to frenetic music. We got a manager called Dai Davies who had been to college with Malcolm McLaren and Andrew Logan [sculptor and friend of Derek Jarman], and he claimed that they had sat down in a pub once in 1973 and invented punk.
