Tony Wilson (owner, The Hacienda) : They came on an hour late and, halfway through the first number, the lights fused. Everything was plunged into total blackness. There was silence for a few seconds, then the slow-handclapping started, and I heard this voice from the stage going “Fucking wankers! They’ve ripped us off again. Let’s storm the fucking stage!”
So I crawl on my hands and knees onto the stage towards this noise, and it’s still like “Riot! Smash the fucking place!” And I get round the back of the main speakers and it’s Hooky (of New Order), inciting the crowd to riot. Bastard.
