Fact #183633

When:

Short story:

Eric Clapton and Stephen Stills work on the Clapton track Let It Rain, and the Stills' track Go Back Home, at Island Studios, London, England, UK, Europe. Later, Stills records Black Queen.

Full article:

Bill Halverson (engineer) : I was in London working on the first Stephen Stills effort when Eric showed up and asked Stephen if he could use me and some of our studio time to finish his album. Let It Rain’s vocals were done with Stills’ harmony in England.

Stephen Stills : Go Back Home was done first take. Actually, that’s Eric just warming up. You know, he said, ‘Let me practice a little,’ and Bill would say, ‘Sure,’ – click! And he’d take it. That’s Eric Clapton warming up, folks.

Bill Halverson : Also one night, while working with Stills, Eric showed up excited and said, ‘Let me record this song before I forget it.’ Five minutes later we had Easy Now recorded, and Stills put harmony on that too.

Stephen Stills : I just walked in the studio and did it (Black Queen). Before that, Eric and I had played Tequila for about an hour and a half and then, all of a sudden, he was gone. He disappeared. He realised that if he didn’t go, he was going to pass out in the studio, so he got someone to drive him home while he was still able to reach the car. I stumbled right into the studio, and that’s what came out. I’d been out to Eric’s house the night before, listening to Blind Willie Johnson records, so the vocal quality is ‘Aaaargh!’. It sounds like a saw. It hurts physically. It hurt my throat to sing like that, but it sure does sound neat.
