Pauline Clegg : The Oasis started off as a jazz club. It was right at the beginning of the pop scene, and at clubs like ours you'd have anybody playing, and pay them peanuts, more or less.
The kids did not want to go to the big Ritz, they wanted something different. There was no liquor. We just had a coffee bar.

Hugh Goodwin (manager, The Oasis) : The queue went right round the block, which was a long way. There were police controlling the crush outside the club doors and when I reached the entrance the police wouldn't let me back in. They didn't believe that I had anything to do with the club.
Natalie Goodwin (catering manageress, The Oasis) : It was chaos. It was so packed that people were fainting – men and women. We were even dragging bodies into the kitchen for resuscitation. That night we ran out of everything – food and drink – all of it was sold.
