Rune Lem (promoter) : I remember in 1987, Thomas Johansson and I had two sold-out shows indoors at Drammenhalle in Oslo, with Tina Turner. But half an hour before showtime, the audience was already in their seats, and we had to go onstage and announce that Tina had lost her voice, so the show had to be cancelled. We said, "We’ll come back to you shortly with another option" but at that time we didn’t actually have any other option. Then I remembered a skating arena which I mentioned to Thomas and Tina’s manager Roger Davies. There had never been a gig there before, but I said we could drive over there, take a look at it, and if it looks OK we’ll put the two shows together and make it a single 30,000 capacity show. So about two days later, we announced Valle Hovin as the new venue, and that was how Valle Hovin got started as a music venue, eventually becoming the most renowned and despised outdoor venue in Norway. We’ve sold over 1.4m tickets there now. If Tina hadn’t lost her voice, Valle Hoven might never have become a music venue.
