Fact #177982

When:

Short story:

When The Jimi Hendrix Experience play at Mariebergsskogen's Folkpark in Karlstad, Varmland, Sweden, Europe, they are surprised to discover that their supporting acts include a troupe of trained seals.

Full article:

Mats Dahlberg (journalist/photographer) : The group's cars rolled out to Mariebergsskogens theatre stage in the morning. At that time no bodyguards or police forces were needed. The group members went on city walks and a short excursion in the woods during the tour stop in Karlstad. It was easy for young fans to meet and chat with the members of the group, an American and the two tanned English musicians.

In the setting of Mariebergsskog's, then bleak brown-painted, open air theatre Gerry Stickells worked hard, though he had the help of a couple of assistants who lugged and carried amplifiers and speakers.

Noel Redding (bassist, Jimi Hendrix Experience) : Not only were we on after the trained seals, but we shared a dressing room with them, complete with buckets of fish!

Mats Dahlberg : Noel Redding was a bit annoyed. He thought that the Swedish organisers hadn’t understood that it was a group. 'Jimi is a singer and guitarist in the group. Mitch and I are two members of the same group,' he said.

“What do you think of Strawberry Fields?” [Jimi Hendrix] wondered as he sat and fingered a Fender guitar and Noel Redding wound on new strings. We agreed, Jimi and I, that ‘Strawberry Fields’ was the best the Beatles had done so far. "I've been thinking about playing ‘Strawberry Fields’ on stage,” he said... But in Karlstad: No Beatles.

Mats Dahlberg : Lasse Karlsson, the head of the place, the man who made Karlstad a 60's entertainment center, had at least suspected that Jimi Hendrix might break the eardrums of the crowd in Mariebergsskogen. But he was still surprised by the noise level. Where he stood listening to the stage, he looked worried. And of course, unaware that the young man out there on the stage floor would become an icon and one of the greatest in rock music.

The concert in May was filled with songs from the group's first album, Are You Experienced?. The first song was ‘Foxy Lady’. The guardian of the open air theatre looked frightened and held his ears. The forest boss seemed worried and thoughtful.

But the crowd, yes, the crowd got the whole thing: ‘Hey Joe’, ‘Purple Haze’, ‘Manic Depression’ and more than these. As the end of the concert approached and the open air theatre still stood well and well-kept despite the noise crashes.

Jimi, Mitch and Noel rounded off with ‘Wild Thing’. The Trogg's version was easy and a little understated with a nice occarina solo, but Jimi Hendrix did not blow occarina in his version of "Wild Thing", he blew on with several incredible guitar solos, chewed (oh yeah!) on the strings of a Fender guitar, which made the sound go round and whine and whistle.

Then the concert ended and many people's views on rock music had changed within 45 minutes.
