Fact #176271

When:

Short story:

At The Knuckles Club, Carlisle St, London, England, UK, Europe, part-owned by Pretty Things drummer Viv Prince, Jimi Hendrix jams with Deep Feeling, which includes Dave Mason on guitar and Jim Capaldi on drums. Later, at Hyde Park Towers, Jimi writes Stone Free.

Full article:

Viv Prince (drummer, Pretty Things) : One night, Chas Chandler came down to the club with this big black American guy and said 'This is Jimi. I've just brought him over from the USA. Can he sit in with your house band?' I said, 'Yes, sure, what does he play?' Chas said, 'The guitar, but he's a frustrated bass player, actually.' So Jimi sat in with his back to the audience, playing bass.

Dave Mason (guitarist, Deep Feeling) : Chas used to take him around to all the clubs. It was a conscious effort on Chas's part to get him known, very subtle, because these were members-only clubs, frequented by entertainment business people. Jimi would get up - jeans, suede jacket, big electric hairdo - and just blow everybody away. I remember thinking I might as well take up another instrument.

Jim Capaldi (drummer, Deep Feeling) : Our bass player Dave Meredith said that they wanted me and him to come down and audition the next day, and he said, 'I didn't know where you were, you disappeared or something'. He said that they really liked us and wanted us to audition, so he always says to me when I see him, 'We could have been in the Experience!'

Chas Chandler : The first song Jimi wrote was Stone Free. When we did Hey Joe, he was on about putting Killing Floor on the b-side, and I said, 'There's nothing going on the b-side but one of your own songs,' and he wrote Stone Free that next night, for The Next Time we went in.
