Claudio Trotta (promoter) : John Martyn was the very first artist for whom I organised a tour, with my newly-formed company Barley Music. It was my company debut.
During our first meeting, Martyn punched me in the eye! I don’t recall which one, but I certainly do recall the pain. He was not satisfied with the hotel I had booked for him and he was right. It was shabby and it was entirely my fault for not finding the time to check it.
Martyn was able to drink seventeen cans of beer, a bottle of whisky and one and a half bottles of red wine, all during the same concert while at the same time, he could create a variety of notes to resemble the sound of a complete orchestra with the sole use of the acoustic guitar.
During the Milan date, Martyn gave the best of himself and at one point, even asked for a joint while on stage!
Although it wasn’t exactly a success, the show was held during a Grand Prix and almost no-one came for the music. Plus, I was not paid.
Nonetheless, I did not get discouraged as the rest of the tour was a discrete success. After the initial punch in the face, Martyn and I became very good friends.
