Fact #17548

When:

Short story:

Californian group The Pendletones, later to become The Beach Boys, meet with publisher Hite Morgan, who invites them to record their song Surfin' at his home studio.

Full article:

Carl Wilson (Beach Boys) : The first thing I seem to remember is Dennis (Wilson) and Michael (Love) going to the beach one day … and they came back and were talking about making a song about surfing and going to the beach. This was in the fall of 61. That's the first thing I remember as far as the reality of the group goes.

Murry Wilson (father of Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson) : Dennis told them, 'Write a song about surfing'. He bugged them. Dennis was an avid surfer. He would disappear every Saturday and Sunday he could, without cutting the lawn. He loved the sport.

Brian Wilson: He said, 'Hey, we got to write a song about surfing. All the kids at school would like it.' My brothers and Mike Love helped me a little bit on the lyrics. We were just thinking about trying to get a fad going. We weren't thinking so much of the sport. I wasn't into that surfing stuff. I didn't care. I never tried it.

Carl Wilson : Dennis was the only one who could really surf. We all tried, even brian, but we were terrible. We just wanted to have a good time and play some music.

Carl Wilson : But, before that, we'd always got round a piano to sing, and we'd go Christmas carolling, and we've always been into music somehow since childhood.

We just said, 'Well, let's see … Dennis and Mike and Brian and Carl'. And Brian had a friend, Al, and that was it. It was really simple.
