Island Records is founded in Jamaica, Caribbean, by Chris Blackwell, Graeme Goodall and Leslie Kong, partially financed by Stanley Borden from RKO. The label's name is inspired by the Harry Belafonte hit Island in the Sun. Initially a reggae label, it will become much more rock oriented in the latter half of the 1960s.
