Fact #170978

When:

Short story:

Madness 7, the third album by Madness, enters the UK albums chart, where it will peak at No5 during a 29-week stay. The album is produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley.

Full article:

Alan Winstanley : We recorded the third album in the Bahamas because the band needed to get out of the UK for tax reasons. Again, it was mixed at Genetic. The rest of the albums were recorded at Air Oxford Street which, by that stage, had pretty much become our base.

Clive Langer : We never considered ourselves to be the eight and ninth members of the band. Our roles were different: they were the band and we were the producers, and that was how it stayed. However, they certainly cemented our relationship as producers.

They went on for such a long time and we had so much fun working on them. We had a lot of hits together and became so comfortable working as a team that it was always really enjoyable being in the studio with them.

When you work with a band for that length of time you're bound to end up close friends. I used to hang out with them more than Alan did, because I lived near them in North London. For a while I was even living in the same house as Suggs, who's married to Bette Bright, the singer in Deaf School.
