Fact #170439

When:

Short story:

The Beatles launch Apple Records and declare National Apple Week in the UK.

Full article:

Alistair Taylor (General manager, Apple) : My main thing at Apple was trying to keep it under control, but I shot myself in the foot. I was finding drinks bills for Derek in the press office, like eight bottles of brandy a week, and ten bottles of whiskey and so on. I started sending memos trying to curb the excesses.

They were handing money out to people like it was going out of fashion. People were being given cars and houses, we had two cordon bleu cooks based in the building, a huge cabinet six foot high full of vintage wines and champagnes. The idea was that it made sense to entertain people in the building rather than going out for expensive lunches, but it just got out of control. We had a food account at Harrods that was costing us a fortune.

Richard DiLello (Apple staffer) : There was an endless supply of great hashish, which was part of my job as The House Hippie to procure, to roll and to dispense. There was a never-ending parade of rock'n'roll royalty and other cultural icons coming through those pearly white doors on Savile Row from sunup to sundown.

Alistair Taylor : I got the boys together for a meeting in about August of 68, and I told them, 'Your money is flying out the window.' They asked what they should do about it and I told them to bring in a really good businessman. The Apple staff were good people but we were really small-town businessmen, none of us had experience of the big business world. I said we needed somebody like Lord Beeching and, next thing I know, they've gone off to see him, but he flatly turned them down. It wasn't the kind of thing that interested him.

Then they talked to The Stones and I think that's where Allen Klein's name came up.
