Sting : We stayed in this big high-rise hotel on the outskirts of town. I was on the 19th floor and down below there was this beautiful lawn with a tennis court and a swimming pool where these people were sitting around under Martini umbrellas, in swimming costumes and sunglasses, sipping cocktails. The typical posh hotel scene.

Then on the other side of the fence, which I could also see, there was a stone-age village where the people were living under canvas sheets and bits of cardboard, and there were fires dotted around, and a hole in the ground for water.

Occasionally, this tennis ball would come over from the hotel, and they’d pick it up and look at it, wondering what the hell it was. And there, beneath me, was this incredible view, a microcosm of old and new India.
