Full article:

Having not released a studio album in seven years, heavy MTV rotation of the single Touch Of Grey helped turn 1987's In The Dark into the Dead's best-selling album ever. It is also regarded as Garcia's final piece of strong work with the band in the studio.

Jerry Garcia : In The Dark made us feel some confidence about making our own records again, instead of letting producers do it.

Bob Weir : It was a major change for us, being on MTV. We'd been doing it, playing the Grateful Dead, for twenty years completely anonymous and then suddenly we're all stars... It was so sudden it was a real shock. I had thought that the nature of our fame was different, that we were heroes of the people or something like that and people would just leave us alone. But that all changed. If they've seen you on TV, they seem to feel like they own you. Being famous is kind of a drag.

Jerry Garcia : The most cogent example of how things have changed in my life is that when The Grateful Dead wasn't working, I used to go and play in bars. Low profile, not many people were interested. Now this has escalated along with everything else. And the stress level has skyrocketed.
