Joan Armatrading : The song seems to be a favourite when I perform live, especially in America. At one point I used to open the show with it. I was in America before this song was written and I met a chap who I ended up spending quite a lot of time with. He was a lot keener on me than I was on him and, when I got back to England, he kept phoning me, trying to get me to go out with him or to go back there. It was all just friends really for me, but I was touched that he was so bothered and that’s where I got the idea from, him ringing constantly, ‘all the way from America.’

I took artistic licence when I was writing it. Not everything mentioned in the song was said, obviously you mould the ideas to form the story and give it some depth. Another change was that it was written from the point of view of the woman wanting him when, in fact, it was vice versa, but it just seemed to work better that way.

The song was a single on the Me Myself I album, which was produced by Richard Gottehrer, who also produced Blondie’s first album. I had some great players in it, like Chris Spedding, Will Lees, Anton Figg and Paul Schaffer, who eventually formed the basis of the house band on the David Letterman Show on US tv. They all met playing on my album, which is nice to remember.
