Fact #168442

When:

Short story:

The Who begin an eight-day break in Los Angeles, California, USA, during which discussions are held with The Rolling Stones about the possibility of staging a Rock'n'Roll Circus.

Pete Townshend (guitarist, The Who) : This was an idea that three bands had almost simultaneously but separately – The Stones, The Small Faces and The Who. I was in LA, playing there with The Who, and I was summoned to see Mick and we had this open forum about the possibility of creating a travelling circus to tour the USA. Mick was deciding at that time whether or not The Small Faces and The Who would let their idea be co-opted and join in with it. I, being an absolute ass-licking Stones fan, agreed.

Chip Monck came up with this fabulous design for a tent based on the original Barnum And Bailey, where trains come up on tracks in the back of small towns and go round in a big circle and all these special carriages would spew out seats, the tent would go up around them and. Hey-ho, you'd have an instant circus. It all looked absolutely feasible.

About two weeks passed and I was very excited about it, and then I got a call from Mick to say that there was a problem. "Well, we've discovered that the track in America is so bad that in a lot of places the trains can only travel at four miles an hour. Which means that the tour would take something like twenty years…" But he'd kind of got the bug for it, as had we all.
