Fact #168430

When:

Short story:

Seven thousand people attend the first Hyde Park rock concert in London, England, UK, Europe, featuring Roy Harper, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Full article:

Nick Mason (drummer, Pink Floyd] : Wonderful, because it was much more a picnic in the park than a mini-Woodstock. A lovely day. It was important for us too because it reminded us of our - ah - roots, whether spurious or not. They were our roots - not personally but as an enterprise. We were the house band.

John Peel (UK underground deejay) : It sounds a bit silly, but it was a religious experience. It was marvellous. They were playing Saucerful Of Secrets and things, and it just seemed to fill the whole sky … and to coincide perfectly with the lapping of the water and the trees and everything. It just seemed to be the perfect event, and I think that's the nicest concert I've ever been to.

Andrew King (organiser, Blackhill Enterprises) : The Parks Superintendent was very pleased with the crowd. Despite an hour's delay because the PA equipment hadn't arrived, there was absolutely no trouble at all. And when they left, the crowd picked up all the litter.
