Start of the three-day 1989 Reading Festival in the UK, which now has a new musical focus, shifting away from heavy rock. Today's event features The Sugarcubes, New Order, House Of Love, The Swans, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine and That Petrol Emotion.

Harold Pendleton (organizer) : I had approached the Mean Fiddler Organisation which, at that time, was an up-and-coming promoter and quite ambitious. We employed them to book the festival on a three-year contract and were very impressed with the booker, David Phillips.

I didn’t get on with Vince (Vince Power of Mean Fiddler) and he wanted to take over the event completely. Before his booking contract ended, he had already registered a company called Reading Festival Ltd.
