Full article:

Peter Buck : I like to see who I'm playing for. We've played these big arenas, man, and we hated it. You know, we opened six dates for The Police and it was miserable. I remember we were sitting in Philadelphia and it was, like, 105 degrees and they were carrying kids over the barriers. It's one in the afternoon and you can't even walk around outside, it's so hot, and we had to go on in 10 minutes. And I'm going, 'Man, I just don't wanna go on, let's just break up the band.'

When we walked onstage, a stagehand laughed and said, “Have a good show – it’s 106 degrees.” The crowd was so stunned with the heat shock that they just looked at us. They didn’t know who the hell we were. We got twenty minutes, so we just did five songs - boom, on and off. When we got offstage, someone said, “Here’s a review in an English paper of your record.” It was a rave. I said, “Some guy in England likes our record. That’s cool.”

Ken Tucker (Philadelphia Enquirer) : Both R.E.M., the brooding Athens, Georgia band, and Madness, a giddy English group, played quick, light sets that allowed them just enough time to prove their talents. R.E.M.’s quirky, dark music may have been too melancholy to go over with a cheerful crowd that come to party, but Madness charmed the audience with its fast-paced tales of jolly English youth.

Peter Buck : It was no fun, we'll never do that shit again. As soon as that show was over it was like, 'Hell, let's go get drunk!'
