Actor William Holden dies alone at home in Santa Monica, California, USA. While intoxicated, he slips on a rug, severely lacerating his forehead on a bedside table, and bleeds to death. His death will inspire the 2018 song The Day William Holden Died by Dan Stuart, and is also referred to in Suzanne Vega's 1987 song Tom's Diner.
