Johnny Marr (guitarist, The Smiths) : The morning we were going to start the American tour, I went over to Morrissey's flat before we went to the airport, and a contract from EMI arrived, that had been sorted out by the lawyer. We were advised that everything was cool - sign it. Do it, sign it, it's going to be a wonderful relationship'. We signed it, and then on the way to the airport we went ‘Hang on a minute - the money we're getting for this contract - where's it going? Is it going to the lawyer? So, at the airport, we hastily signed a letter trying to divert the money to the band. That was posted at the airport.

Pat Bellis (press officer, Rough Trade) : We knew they were talking to EMI but no-one told us that papers had been signed.
