Johnny Marr (The Smiths) : It was horrible. A horrible gig. It was a terrible sound, so right from the off it was difficult. I was about seven stone. I remember meeting Derek Jarman and a couple of his friends before we went on, and he was very gracious. It was really weird. It being daylight wasn't good. That place still isn't great now, but then it was awful. My fondest memory of that gig is when New Order came on and played Elegie. They made a statement: four of them stood there, playing synthesisers, bathed in blue light. Manchester was a circus that weekend.
