Fact #165807

When:

Short story:

Morrissey of The Smiths unexpectedly decides not to appear on UK BBC-tv show Wogan, due for transmission tonight.

Full article:

Scott Piering (radio plugger, Rough Trade records) : It was so exciting that nobody really cared that it was crazy. We were all kind of holding on by the skin of our teeth. The more they said no to people - the more they fucked people off - the more people kept coming back for more. It was amazing. The fucking Smiths cancelled Wogan! Morrissey got on a train back to Manchester four hours before the live broadcast.

Matthew Sztumpf (manager, the Smiths) : Morrissey decided that The Smiths should not be on Wogan. The show was due on air at 7pm, and I was not a popular person.

I was at the studio: Where's Mozzer? Eventually, someone suggested calling his mother to see if he was at home, and sure enough he was. The rest of the band seemed to accept it and went home. I have said that that was the low-point of my career. It wasn't very pleasant.

I made up some excuse that he was ill. It could have caused all sorts of repercussions. The embarrassment was having the members of the band and myself sitting in the studio waiting for him, and the lack of consideration Morrissey had for us. The least he could have done was tell his band.
