Jeffrey Kruger (tour promoter) : The night before we were in Switzerland, Europe I left early and I left my son, Howard, with Marvin to bring him back. We got him up early but he had the attitude that we didn’t trust him and why did we bring him home early. He had been taking drugs and he was screaming, “What does the Princess want with black trash like me?” He said he was not doing the show.
I knew nothing of this until I got to the club. I phoned him but couldn’t make any sense. He ran naked around the Britannia hotel saying I was going to kill him. Berry Gordy and Mike Roshkind promptly called Marvin from Hollywood and offered him a huge cash bonus if he would appear, but even they could not penetrate his drugged head.
At the end of the evening, when almost everyone had left the club, Marvin actually turned up. He even had the band in the coach with him. While the cleaners were tidying the place, he played piano. So this million-selling genius’s last gig in England was to a dozen cleaners in a deserted club.
The press had a field day and the story that ‘Marvin Gaye Snubs Royal Family’ was the flavour of the day on radio, tv and in every newspaper. I was finished with Marvin, and he was finished with Britain.
