Fact #165060

When:

Short story:

The Miami Pop Festival (also known as the Underground Pop Festival), begins at the Gulf Stream Race Track, Hallandale, Miami, Florida, USA, with The Jimi Hendrix Experience, John Lee Hooker, Frank Zappa, Blue Cheer, Arthur Brown and Eire Apparent.

Full article:

Michael Lang (festival organiser) : After the music began we realised somebody had forgotten to pick up Hendrix at the airport. I sent cars out to get him, but Jimi had gotten impatient and rented a helicopter. This turned out to be beautiful. Just as Jimi was due on stage, and we were going berserk, this helicopter came hovering over the stage and Jimi comes down a ladder. He played an incredible set.

Arthur Brown (musician) : That event seemed to be run by gangsters. I was standing about ten yards away when I saw Jimi go inside to get his money. A few seconds later, he backed out through the door with his arms raised. There was a guy pushing him, with a shotgun stuck into Hendrix's belly. He said, 'I think you'll wait, Mr Hendrix.' Jimi took it quite calmly, but it was a revelation about what was happening to the peace and love movement. Everything was changing.

Mick Cox (Eire Apparent guitarist) : We're sitting there waiting, 'Where's the money?' 'Oh, we've got to wait until my partner arrives.' And he's got this big guy with him carrying a gun. Then the (Brinks Security) wagon pulls up outside, guy comes upstairs and he's got two others with him, both carrying guns. And the guy says, 'You are gonna pay the boys the rest of the money?' the other one says, 'No, no, there's been a change of plan. We're not gonna pay them. It's gonna be sent on.' So the first one says 'Sorry, we've got to pay them now.' 'No we're not.' Then they all get out their guns and they're facing one another. 'Well,' says the second one, 'My guys have got more armoury than you haveā€¦' And there's this whole number going on where they're going to shoot each other - it was all an act, but we didn't realise then.
