Mrs Ralph Thomas (newsagent manageress, Pontardawe, Wales) : I didn't know what had hit us on the Saturday night of that first Opportunity Knocks. People came in for postcards – not just one packet but six at a time. I ran right out and ordered some more but, by Monday, we were sold out again. Everyone voted for our Mary – not just the familes but whole factories – they say even the cats voted. People queued for stamps and the postboxes were overflowing.

Peter Asher (head of A + R, Apple Records) : Paul had heard the song, Those Were The Days, sung by two people in The Blue Angel, a nightclub in London, England, UK, Europe. As soon as he heard Mary singing, he said, 'We must sign her, and I know exactly what her first single will be.'
