David Price : I was fortunate enough to meet Peter Gabriel on several of his visits to Esalen in California. Peter was gracious enough to extend an invitation to visit him at Real World "whenever in the area". I was there while he and Youssou N'dour were tracking the soundtrack to "Last Temptation of Christ" (we sat in the loft of the main control room very late into the night while just the two of them – along with one engineer – were working doing vocals for the track "A Different Drum" – which was obviously an exceptional experience).
I was with my girlfriend at the time and we spent several days in the area before. It was one of the great "what if" moments in my life: at dinner, most of his band was there and they were discussing "the gig" the next day (huge globally broadcast Nelson Mandela birthday gig at Wembley). Peter asked if we wanted to come (meaning go in the van with them). Peter was a great host and extended a lot of hospitality and we decided not to take too much advantage and declined – big mistake…
