Jon Spencer (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) : I made a trip to England after I finished high school, to visit a friend. So getting a chance to see The Residents was a real treat. The Residents were at the back of the stage, behind a screen, you could only sort of see shadows of the musicians. They always hid their identities, that’s what they were famous for. It was basically The Mole Show. They told a story about this warped society of moles that was taken from their three album rock opera (The Mole Trilogy).

The show was really performance orientated. It wasn’t like a real rock show. There were dancers or puppets or something in front acting out the story a little bit. Penn Gillette (later of Penn And Teller fame) was the narrator for the show. At the end he got tied up and then the band performed their version of Satisfaction…. Incredibly brutal and nasty sounding. I was definitely very excited about the whole thing.
