Jay Ferguson (guitar/vocals, Spirit) :  When Spirit was first signed, Columbia had their annual company promotional event down in Puerto Rico to introduce people to the new signings. They said, "We're going to introduce three new bands for the year, this was early 1967, and they were Big Brother and the Holding Company, Blood, Sweat And Tears and Spirit." We all played a show for the executives there. Not a bad year.

That was our first trip abroad. We were still babes on the scene. I have a distinct memory of getting up early one morning, I couldn't sleep. I went down to the beach, and it was totally deserted except for one figure. As I got closer, I could see that this figure was surrounded by discarded Jack Daniels bottles. It was Janis Joplin.

We sat and we talked for a while, then she jumped in the water and I was scared to death she'd never be able to make it back to shore. She was just a sweetheart, but terribly unhappy.

At that point, she was already a sensation on the West Coast, and they'd played Monterey Pop, and everybody knew big things were coming, but the arc was so short for her.
