Fact #161981

When:

Short story:

In the morning, The Who are photographed feigning sleep beneath a Union Jack flag at Grant's Tomb, New York City, USA. The picture will eventually be used as the cover of the album The Kids Are Alright. That same evening, The Who play the first of two nights in the Fillmore East, New York City, supported by Buddy Guy and The Free Spirits.

Pete Townshend (guitarist, The Who) : Even in New York, where you knew that (promoter) Bill (Graham) wasn't as in charge as he had been in San Francisco - it was in the papers all the time about local threats and stuff that was going on - you still felt you were going into his territory.

John Morris (director, Filmore East) : Pete had been talking to me about peace and how he was never going to smash his amps again. He had been talking about how maybe he had been doing the wrong thing. Maybe he had been contributing to all this violence. He went on stage and he started to play. About halfway through the set, I was up on stage and I looked at him and I knew everything was about to change. Because up to that point, he had played this whole subdued physical thing.

Then he turned around and went at the amps. We had a screen behind them. While Townshend stabbed them, beat the shit out of them, and then smashed his guitar over them. At one point, he looked over and he saw me. And I went, "Whoops. .." because I thought he was going to come over the top with a guitar and get me. He lost it. He had gotten so into it so much that he had lost it and reverted. There was so much boiling up in him that the only way he could get it out was to do it that way.

Eric Rosen (audience) : The Who were fantastic. I liked it when they busted everything up.  Townshend walked to the tip of the stage, held his guitar like a lance, and ran into his amplifiers.  It was unbelievable!  He picked up the mike stand and rammed it across the guitar.  It was the most incredible thing I had ever seen!  Moon picked up his big bass drum and made believe he was going to throw it into the audience.  They were wild then.
